The Costa Brava — 'rugged coast' — runs north from Barcelona to the French border. It is a 200-kilometre line of pine-clad cliffs, hidden coves, fishing villages and small Roman and medieval towns. Less developed than the Costa del Sol or the Algarve, it remains one of Spain's most photogenic coastlines, with a Mediterranean climate that delivers a strong May-to-September season and quieter, mild shoulder months.
Late May through June and September are ideal — warm but not hot, sea swimmable, and the calas not yet crowded. July and August are the busiest with French and Spanish holidaymakers; October is excellent for hiking the Camí de Ronda coastal path.
Mild rather than cold: 13-14°C highs, occasional rain, and a quiet character. Most coastal restaurants close from November to Easter. Inland medieval villages like Pals and Peratallada are atmospheric in the off-season.
March and April see the landscape green up after winter rain. By May daytime temperatures reach 22-24°C and the Camí de Ronda comes into its own. Sea temperatures lag — only by late May does swimming become comfortable.
June through August is dry, sunny and warm: 28-30°C highs, sea at 22-25°C, and twelve hours of daylight. August is the busiest fortnight — coastal villages like Calella de Palafrugell and Cadaqués fill up and reservations everywhere become essential.
September is the connoisseur's month: water still warm from summer, air softening into the mid-twenties, and crowds gone. October keeps mild temperatures and is excellent for cycling, walking and the wineries of the Empordà.
Different rather than better. The Costa Brava is rockier, cooler, more visually dramatic and less developed. The Costa del Sol is hotter, flatter, sandier and more resort-oriented.
Begur or Calella de Palafrugell give access to the prettiest calas. Cadaqués is more remote and atmospheric. Lloret is cheapest and busiest.
Very crowded in the small fishing villages and on the most photogenic calas. Arrive early, leave by 11am, and book restaurants days ahead.
Late May for the brave, mid-June for most. Sea climbs from 16°C in April to 22°C in June, peaking around 25°C in August.
