Winter sun destinations

The warmest, sunniest, driest holiday spots for the European winter — ranked by averaging twenty years of climate data across November, December, January and February against a classic beach-holiday profile (22–33°C, 7+ hours of sun, fewer than 2 rainy days per week).

Winter sun is one of the most-searched travel intents from Europe between October and February, but the data behind the recommendations is rarely shown. This page ranks 15 destinations from twenty years of historical climate records (ECMWF ERA5, served by Open-Meteo), averaging the daily mean temperature, sunshine hours, rainfall and wind across November, December, January and February against a classic beach-holiday profile: 22–33°C, at least seven hours of sun a day and fewer than two rainy days per week.

Three patterns emerge year after year. First, true winter sun — meaning warm enough to swim comfortably — only exists at low latitudes: the Caribbean, the Maldives, equatorial South-East Asia and a thin band of the southern Indian Ocean. Second, the warmest spots reachable from Europe in under five hours are the Canary Islands, Madeira, southern Cyprus, the Red Sea coast and Marrakech, all of which sit in the 18–24°C range with mostly dry, sunny weather. Third, the European mainland — even southern Spain, Portugal and the Greek islands — is mild but unreliably wet through midwinter, and tends to score poorly on this ranking despite reading well in glossy brochures.

Gambia tops the table this season at 27.5°C and 10.3 hours of sun a day across the four months, followed by Phuket and Cancún. The full ranking is below, along with month-by-month tables for November, December, January and February so you can compare a Caribbean Christmas against a Canary Islands February, or check whether the Maldives in January really is as good as it looks on paper.

Questions fréquentes

What is the best winter sun destination?

Gambia ranks #1 for winter sun in our dataset, averaging 27.5°C and 10.3 hours of sunshine a day across November to February.

Where is the warmest place in Europe in winter?

For the warmest European winter sun, the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria), Madeira and the southern coast of Cyprus stay mildest — typically 18–22°C in December and January with 6–7 hours of sun a day. For reliably hot winter weather you need to leave Europe (Caribbean, Maldives, Thailand).

Is December or February better for winter sun?

December is more reliable in the southern-hemisphere tropics (Bali, Mauritius) and the Caribbean. February is slightly warmer in the Canaries and the Red Sea. Use the per-month links to compare.

Where is hot in January?

January is peak dry season for South-East Asia (Phuket, Sri Lanka), the Caribbean and the Maldives. Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Marrakech are the warmest options in striking distance of Europe.

Where can I find guaranteed sunshine in winter?

No climate is guaranteed, but the most reliable winter sun in our 20-year dataset is the Caribbean (Cancún, Punta Cana), the Maldives and the southern Red Sea — they sit close enough to the equator that the sun angle stays high and the dry season lines up with the European winter.

Is it warm enough to swim in the Canary Islands in winter?

Air temperatures in Tenerife and Gran Canaria sit around 19–22°C through December and January, with sea temperatures of roughly 19–20°C. Comfortable for sunbathing and short swims, especially in sheltered south-coast bays, but cooler than a typical summer holiday.

What about Dubai, Egypt or Morocco?

The Red Sea coast (Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh), Dubai and Marrakech all offer mild, dry winters in the 18–25°C range with very little rain. They are the strongest options for a short-haul winter sun trip from Europe when the Canaries feel too cool.

Where should I avoid for winter sun?

Most of the northern Mediterranean (mainland Spain, Italy, the Greek mainland) is mild but wet and cloudy through December and January. Use the ranking above to skip past these and focus on destinations that actually stay warm and dry.
